At today’s International Eucharistic Congress, I visited the St John Ambulance group in Simmonscourt to find out how the Congress was going for them. I spoke to John and Sean who explained that they have three shifts, from 8am to 10:30pm, with 15 people on duty each day, including 3 Doctors, mostly volunteers from Europe, and three local nurses. They have had an average of 30 patients each day, including some trips to hospital, mainly for chest pains and damage to limbs. Their personnel are in two locations, Simmonscourt and in the medical centre, staffing of which they share with The Order of Malta. I have to say I was surprised at this level of activity, and recognised the significant value of their work, even though they described it as “just another gig”!
