Youth Space – Fully Loaded!!!!

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress will go down in history for many reasons, but on Monday night, history was made when the first ever Youth Space was opened and kicked off with “Get Set Go – Communion in One Baptism”. It was a lively kick off to the Youth Space, with prayers through music, and different forms of games.

Following the lively warm-up the youngest Bishop in the UK, Mark Davies, from the Diocese of Shrewsbury, spoke on Catechesis & Conversation – A New Creation. The talk revolved around being involved in the Church and taking action. After the talk, a group discussion focused on the theme “Go Be Church – How?”, during which there was a good back and forth between pilgrims and Bishop Davies, with points raised about the need for the Church to play a more active role in the community and to show unity and leadership to the next generation.

Later in the evening, the Youth Space welcomed the Papal Legate, His Eminence Marc Cardinal Ouellet, and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. The Papal Legate addressed the young crowd and told them that he will keep them in his prayers for the week of Congress, and that he was delighted to see so many of them at the first-ever Youth Space.

The main event of the evening was the special Prayer with the Brothers of Taize, which attracted so many that the space was full of people from aged 14 and upwards, and there were more than 100 outside hoping for additional space. Brother Alois Loser & Brother Jean-Marie Goodma started by focusing on an Icon and prayed mostly through song.

There was a special visitor at the Youth Space on Monday night – one of the youngest pilgrims to attend was a 6 month old baby with his parents, who attended the Taize Prayers as they had visited Taize in France, and were interested in the similarities.

The Night concluded with Night Prayer, during which the Taize cross was placed on the floor and the pilgrims in turn, knelt in front of the cross, placed their heads on it and said a prayer. It was a majestic and peaceful experience. I would strongly advise anyone who is attending the Congress this week to check out this new and very exciting Youth Space.

I really enjoyed this, John. There's a great sense of energy and enthusiasm about it. Makes me want to visit Youth Space -- it's great to hear that so many young people have been turning out for this
