4   Is there literature which can usefully be read and studied in advance of a Eucharistic Congress?

Among the literature which can very usefully be read and studied are the documents of the Magisterium such as:

• The Instruction De cultu mysterii eucaristici (1967);
• the Roman Ritual De comunione et de cultu eucaristico extra missam (1973) nn. 110 - 111;
• the Encyclical Letter of Pope John Paul II Ecclesia de Eucaristia (2003);
• the Post-Synodal Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis (2007), of Pope Benedict XVI .

Each Congress also has its own theological reflection which will be of particular help in engaging with the theme chosen for that particular Congress.

5   What are the essential features that constitute the celebration of a Eucharistic Congress?

The Roman Ritual points out in no. 112 that the centre of every Eucharistic Congress is the celebration of the Eucharist, the source and summit of the whole Christian life. The celebration of the word of God and various workshops and talks can contribute to examining the various aspects of the Eucharistic Mystery – aspects that are suggested by the theme of the Congress. The possibility of praying in common and of adoring the Blessed Sacrament in designated churches contributes to interiorizing these themes. Finally, Eucharistic processions can help to express a public and ritual dimension to the faith in the Eucharist, which is celebrated, reflected upon and re-affirmed during the Congress.

6  How long does a Eucharistic Congress last?

Depending on the pastoral needs to be fulfilled, the resources available and the circumstances, a Eucharistic Congress can take place for a day or last for many days. When resources are limited, many dioceses can unite in a common celebration to employ their resources in the most effective manner.

7   Is there a  follow-up to the Congress?

Just as it is essential to prepare well for a Congress, it is equally important that there is a follow up at local level through the work of the permanent delegates and their committees, to ensure that the Congress actually bears the desired fruit in the life of the Church.

8  How did the Eucharistic Congress begin and when?

The idea of the Eucharistic Congress (originally called Eucharistic pilgrimages) came from the insight and commitment of Miss Émilie-Marie Tamisier (1834-1910). The work of International Eucharistic Congresses began in France in 1881 as a fruit of the Eucharistic apostolate of Saint Peter-Julian Eymard.

In the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, the Eucharistic Congresses, in addition to promoting a deeper understanding of and participation in the celebration of the Eucharist (the Mass), sought to focus attention on the essential link between the Eucharist and the service of those who are poor and oppressed. The Synod of Bishops (2005) expressed this responsibility as follows: Before the Lord of history and the future of the world, the suffering of the poor, the ever more numerous victims of injustice and all the forgotten people of the earth, cannot be alien to the celebration of the Eucharistic mystery, which commits baptised persons to work for justice and the transformation of the world in an active and conscious way. Pastoral Preparation Programme for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress

1  What is the Pastoral Preparation Programme and where can I find it?

We consider the Congress to be, not just a week long event, but rather a pilgrim journey. Diocesan and parish communities all over Ireland have been participating in this interior journey of spiritual and pastoral preparation for the Congress.

The programme of preparation has been devised in four stages and invites people to explore:

- Stage 1: The meaning of Christian assembly (the fact that we gather as a community rather than a collection of individuals)
- Stage 2: The role of the Scriptures in forming us into “one body in Christ”
- Stage 3: The meaning of the Eucharist as Sacrifice and Sacrament
- Stage 4: The relationship between our Christian assembly, in which we are nourished by the Word and the Eucharist, and the mission which is entrusted to us as Christians living in the world

Read more about the Pastoral Programme of Preparation and the resources for the four stages.

2  How do I participate in the Pastoral Preparation Programme?

There are many options to suit individuals or groups. You may prefer to prepare as a family, or with your parish group, or with a group of parishes, or with you school. Whatever the way, you may download the pastoral preparation programme and adapt the materials and resources to your own needs. A CD Rom including all the elements of the pastoral programme has been sent to every parish in Ireland. A limited numbers of CDs are available directly from the Congress office.

If you are from country other than Ireland, a delegate may have been assigned by the Bishops' Conference in your country to support preparation for the Congress in your country. Read the list of national delegates

As part of the preparations in Ireland, a delegate was assigned to every diocese in Ireland to help each diocese prepare for the Congress at a local level. Read the list of diocesan delegates in Ireland

3  Has the Congress prepared any theological material to prepare for the Congress?

In March 2009, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin (Archdiocese of Dublin) established the Theological Commission, made up of experts in the fields of biblical studies, liturgy, theology, anthropology, pastoral theology and ecumenism, and entrusted them with the task of developing a document incorporating pastoral and theological reflections which would provide the basis for an appropriate spiritual renewal. Following extensive consultation, the Congress theological document was published in October 2010. This document is also available in Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and German

4  What is the Eucharistic Congress Bell?

The Congress Bell is like our version of the Olympic Torch. The bell represents the invitation to the Eucharist and to the Congress. It is a call to faith, to prayer, to conversion and the vocation to service and to mission. The Bell is being brought from place to place around Ireland by teams of volunteers. It is a focal point for gathering and for prayer, in cathedrals, parish churches and places of pilgrimage. Accompanying the Bell are four Icons which correspond to the four stages of the Pastoral Preparation Programme. We hope the Icons will stimulate catechesis as they accompany the Eucharistic Congress Bell from diocese to diocese. Read more about the Bell and the pilgrimage.

5  How can I participate in the pilgrimage of the Eucharistic Congress Bell?

Stage One of the pilgrimage was completed at the end of January. Stage Two, which visits places around the country which did not receive the Bell the first time, has now begun. If you would like to participate of the Eucharistic Congress Bell pilgrimage, in one of the liturgies or as a volunteer carrier, please contact your diocesan delegate. The delegates are organising the Bell’s pilgrimage locally. Read the list of diocesan delegates in Ireland

7   Can I be a Bell carrier?

If you are interested in becoming a Bell carrier while the Bell is in your diocese, please contact the diocesan delegate for your diocese.

8  What are the icons that accompany the Bell?

A key feature of the journey to the 50th International Eucharistic Congress is a Pastoral Programme exploring the meaning of the Eucharist in our lives. This is facilitated through reflection on the four Eucharistic Congress Icons. Each icon corresponds to one element of the Eucharistic liturgy on which we are inviting people to focus in the pastoral preparation; namely Gathering (Assembly), the Word, the “Breaking of Bread” (Sacrifice and Sacrament) and Mission (what we are sent out to do – glorifying God by our lives). Together they invite us to look again at what we are assembled to do and sent out to be through our participation in the Mass.

Other questions about the 50th International Eucharistic Congress

1    Why are Christians from other traditions taking part in the 50th International Eucharistic Congress?

One of the more significant features of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress, is the dedication of one day, June 11th 2012, to celebrating and reflecting on the relationship of Communion into which Christians are drawn through Baptism. The Second Vatican Council specifically recognised this Communion which makes us one body, even though we do not have the fullness of Eucharistic Communion.

One of the biggest challenges for Christians of all traditions in today’s society is to bear common witness to our faith in Jesus. This is not about denying the differences of faith and worship which still remain to be resolved. Concrete expressions of the communion which we already have as Christians, challenge us to work towards the fullness of unity which is the will of Christ.

2   How is the Congress addressing the issue of Social Justice?

Social Justice issues are being addressed both in our preparatory programme and in the programme of keynote addresses and workshops which are being prepared for the Congress. You will find some of those which have already been confirmed on our website.

Our Justice and Development Committee of the Congress has just completed a programme for parishes to review how inclusive they are and to explore how they can become more so.

Obviously the Congress itself cannot resolve all the issues facing Irish society. It is the hearts of people and the structures of society that have to change. It is, however, central to the pastoral plan of the Congress that it would challenge attitudes and provoke reflection on these questions

3   How is the Congress addressing the issue of reconciliation?

One day of the Congress focuses particularly on the theme of reconciliation. Just like the theme of the Congress itself, this will be reconciliation in our communion with Christ and in our communion with one another. Alongside the penitential liturgy, celebrated by Cardinal Turkson, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the keynote addresses and many of the workshops on that day will explore the various dimensions of the challenge of reconciliation in our society, relating especially to:

• sectarian and intercommunity violence
• economic exploitation
• the abuse of children

As with other themes, the focus is not just for the Congress itself, but also for the life of Church and society which continues after the Congress

4   How is the Congress addressing the difficult economic climate Irish people are facing?

In the first place, the Congress identifies very closely with the difficult economic climate which Irish people are facing. Like most people, we have worked hard to keep our costs down and to make sure that we spend wisely the money that is available to us. We have, like most organisations and families, reduced our budget and have done without what we could not afford.

While the Congress is making a significant contribution to the economy, we have specifically not sought the kind of public funding which would normally be made available for a large international event such as this. We are aware that there are other projects such as healthcare and education which require that funding more urgently.

The Congress has a solidarity programme to facilitate the participation of those who would not be otherwise in a position to come to the Congress for economic reasons.

In terms of the Congress Programme itself, we have a number of workshops which invite people to reflect on economic justice from the perspective of the Gospel and Catholic social teaching.
