Cardinal Seán Brady, from Laragh, County Cavan, was born in 1939. He was educated at St Patrick’s College, Cavan, St Patrick's College, Maynooth, and in Rome at the Pontifical Irish College and the Pontifical Lateran University. He was ordained a priest in 1964.
He served as professor in St Patrick's College, Cavan, for thirteen years and was then appointed to the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, where he became Rector of the College in 1980.
In 1993 he returned to parish work in the Diocese of Kilmore for two years, until he was ordained Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh, and was installed as Archbishop of Armagh in 1996. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI elevated Archbishop Brady to the College of Cardinals.
