
Archbishop Barry James Hickey was born in Leonora in the West Australian Goldfields on April 16, 1936. He was ordained priest in Rome on December 20, 1958. Following ten years of parish ministry in Perth, he became Director of the Catholic Marriage Guidance Council and completed graduate studies in Social Work at the University of Western Australia. Having spent seven years as Bishop of Geraldton he was appointed Archbishop of Perth in 1994. Features of his time as Archbishop have been the establishment of the LifeLink funding organisation for the Church’s expanding charitable works including Linda's House of Hope for women moving on from prostitution, The Shopfront a drop-in social centre, and Daydawn an Aboriginal Advocacy Centre and Pregnancy Assistance for crisis pregnancy support. Today Archbishop Hickey will give the catechesis on God’s loving Communion in family life.
